A sophisticated romance-turned-investment scam targeted victims across six Florida counties and as far as Massachusetts . Perpetrators built emotional connections with victims online before introducing them to fraudulent cryptocurrency investment platforms. One Marion County, Florida victim, who lost over $450,000, believed the money was gone forever and never even filed a police report.
Our Approach:
In partnership with the Attorney General’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit (CFEU) and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, our team of forensic investigators and legal partners launched a comprehensive recovery operation. We utilized advanced blockchain tracing techniques to track the stolen funds, filed legal actions to freeze the assets, and coordinated with law enforcement across state lines to build a case for recovery .
The Outcome:
This operation resulted in the largest single-state cryptocurrency recovery in history, with $5.4 million successfully reclaimed . The victim who lost $450,000 received an unexpected visit from the Sheriff’s Office informing him that his money had been located and would be returned. The remaining recovered funds are being used to continue funding law enforcement recovery operations, ensuring that more victims can receive help in the future.
